Justice for Indian Press - Paranjoy Guha Thakurta

Hello readers 👋

Before my blogs get too personal. I thought of writing on something that is personal yet not so personal.

Paranjoy Guha Thakurta- Journalist , a documentary filmmaker and the author of gas wars and sue the messenger. He has been a guest faculty in IIMs and taught in JNU and university of delhi . And is one of the most veracious reporters around us today (Atleast that's what you feel when you read his books, he fearlessly targets capitalism, prefers staying unknown, could not be bought even by the richest man like many other journalists can be)

It all started when the editor of a portal named the citizen- seema mustafa asked paranjoy to write or rather compile the articles and information about the adani topic. He wrote his first article about PM's visit to australia along with Gautam Adani and Arundhati Bhattacharya (The head of SBI).He also wrote about the rumours that SBI would give a billion dollar loan for a project in Galilee Basin in Queensland (which was at that time described as the world’s biggest greenfield coal mining project). Australian environmental groups were seen protesting against the idea and briefing that the project does not just include coal mines and that it's a huge project.

In the end the loan was not materialized and the project scaled down.

He was issued with arrest warrant for a defamation case against adani. He was also jailed following his articles on allegations of Adani tax evasion.Entities of the Adani Group have filed more than six cases of defamation against him.

Indian press freedom on exhibition ig 🤷‍♀️.

It took Hidenburg's report for indians to get to know about an indian journalist's struggle against an indian billionaire 👏.

Hindenburg is a short seller. They published a report on January 25th 2023 accusing the Adani Group of financial irregularities, leading to a significant drop in the company's stock price. Hindenburg likely profited from this by buying back the borrowed shares at a lower price(Wallstreet brains 😎). A Young man named Nathan Anderson is the founder of Hindenburg Research which is a New York-based investment management firm,Hindenburg was the former president of Germany thanks to whom Hitler came to power, Nathan gave his own company this name because it symbolised or epitomised a man-made disaster. For starters Hidenburg's like stratton oakmont 😉 except for they were brokerages and Hidenburg's not a client based firm.

Recently ,a year and a half after the explosive Hindenburg Report on Adani, the Indian regulator accused the US-based short seller of malpractice to which Hindenburg responded that SEBI wants to silence it and protect the corrupt.

In a debate of Hindenburg against SEBI, I stand with paranjoy guha thakurta. You might wonder Why do I have so much sympathy for a random journalist (well, he is not any other journalist) but here in the current scenario his state represents the state of press freedom in INDIA. And he wants SEBI and SBI to look into the allegations keenly one more time bcz these are allegations made even before the Hindenburg report came out.

He believes that press freedom in India is under greater threat than ever before.

These kinds of legal actions are what you call SLAPPS, or Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation. The idea is to send a message to everybody else that if they can do it to a 67-year-old person like him with 45 years of work experience, who has worked in some of the leading media organisations in the country, it can happen to anybody.

Mr.Paranjoy resigned from the post of editor of  ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL WEEKLY (EPW), If people like him left the media it would make the pillar even weaker. For me it was not about Hindenburg or billionaires, it's all for the Indian Press Freedom.

  1. Actully i want to know what did he wrote in his artical, that would give me a better understanding about was was he acused. If possible you can provide link to his artical as well. But really well written and also engaging , well researched and the points you wrote about Hindenburg balances out your pov on the adani situation, may be the Hindenburg report has negative bias against adani which definitely benifits them. Looking forward for more such blogs.

  2. Definitely the press does not have so much freedom to speak againt the goverment or instutions supported by the goverment. But dont you think it's always like that in any corner of the world. Because naratives are driven by power. I think the same thing goes on in all the powerful countries. And this thing should definitely change. And everyone should get a balanced understanding what is going on in our country.

Much needed mental vitamins 🖤

Hello readers! Recently so me things gave me chills , things I never thought would happen to someone around me or someone so close to me as my brother. Let me put it this way, we had to pick up my brother from his school 2 hours earlier than his regular school time for around 3 days in a row. The reason as told by his principal was t hat he misses his mother  (he is 12 yrs old). Funny right ? the first day when he came home given this reason it was funny for us as well. But later when we had to pick him up early for three consecutive days...it wasn't funny. He did unusual things like waking up at the midnight and completing his incomplete notebooks or crying about not having friends (because he was a new student), which was strange for us, because he never really cared about finding friends and completing his incomplete notebooks before. On one not very fine day we got a call from the school again asking to pick him up once again because he misses his mother and just wanted ...

The foxes' land 🦚 - Not HCU's not the government's.

Hello readers 👋 I know I'm way too late on writing about this issue but I just couldn't get enough time to get involved in this one as i get with the other ones.  But anyways it’s not every day that you see students getting arrested over bulldozers right?!?! but that’s exactly what happened at the University of Hyderabad (HCU) on March30, 2024. What started as a peaceful protest turned into full-blown clashes, with bulldozers entering the 400-acre stretch of land (Kancha Gachibowli) that’s been a point of contention for over two decades. The Telangana government planned to clear the forested area to make space for an IT park, but let’s be honest this wasn’t about just land, it’s about so much more. On March 29, bulldozers started rumbling towards the disputed land, and that’s when the students decided to make their voices heard. Over 50 students were arrested for blocking the bulldozers, and after a few hours, they were released on personal bonds. But that didn’t stop the prot...
